From Herrad of Landsberg in the twelfth century to Franz Joseph Haydn in the eighteenth, this concert will explore themes of nature in early music for solo voice and harpsichord on the beautiful grounds of Hauck Botanic Garden.
Hortus Deliciarum (Latin for Garden of Delights) was an illuminated encyclopedia begun in 1167 and finished almost two decades later. Intended as a teaching tool for novices at the Hohenburg Abbey, it was compiled by the abbess of Hohenburg, Herrad of Landsberg. Hortus Deliciarum is both the first encyclopedia believed to be written by a woman and one of the first sources from a convent that we have of polyphony—music with two or more simultaneous melodic lines.
